The Raval is one of Barcelona’s liveliest and most diverse neighbourhoods, with world-class museums, medieval corners and a vibrant street life. Terpy It’s on Carrer de Valldonzella, next to the MACBA area. Here’s our tour of the neighbourhood.
MACBA and Plaça dels Àngels
The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art It is housed in a white building that has become an icon of the neighbourhood. Its square, Plaça dels Àngels, is a meeting place for skaters from all over the world.
CCCB
Next to it is the Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture, featuring exhibitions, film series and discussions. It’s well worth taking a look at the programme.
Former Hospital of the Holy Cross
A Gothic complex that served as a hospital for centuries and now houses the Biblioteca de Catalunya. Its inner garden, with its orange trees, is one of the most peaceful spots in the city centre.
Rambla del Raval and Botero’s cat
La Rambla del Raval is wide and lined with terraces. At the end of it, you’ll find the Gat, Fernando Botero’s large sculpture of a cat, one of the neighbourhood’s classic photos.
Sant Pau del Camp
A small Romanesque church, one of the oldest in Barcelona, with a beautiful cloister. It’s surprising to find it right in the heart of the neighbourhood.
La Boqueria and La Rambla
The Raval neighbourhood stretches as far as La Rambla, where the La Boqueria Market. Go in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Tips for visiting the Raval
- Keep an eye on your belongings: as in the rest of the city centre, there are pickpockets.
- Don’t buy anything from street vendors, and certainly not cannabis: not only is it illegal, but you don’t know what you’re getting.
- Consuming cannabis in public places is a criminal offence.
How to get there
